In equine sports medicine, accurate and timely diagnosis is essential to maintaining the health and performance of horses. One of the most critical tools for achieving this is diagnostic imaging technology, which enables veterinarians to see beyond what is visible to the naked eye and detect underlying issues that may affect a horse’s athletic performance or overall well-being.
At Sports Med Vet, we are proud to offer cutting-edge imaging technology designed specifically for equine athletes. Our portable, high-powered X-ray and next-generation ultrasound systems provide our clients with comprehensive, accurate diagnostics on-site.
Portable High-Powered X-Ray
Our high-powered portable X-ray system is capable of capturing detailed images of large areas, such as the head, neck, and back. Wireless capability makes it ideal for high volume series, such as PPEs and yearling sales repository.
Advanced Ultrasound
We offer expert ultrasound evaluations to investigate and diagnose performance related issues. This includes musculoskeletal, cardiac and laryngeal examinations. We have a range of specialised ultrasound probes, enabling us to assess a variety of conditions with precision.
Areas of advanced ultrasound evaluation include:
- Ultrasound-guided injection of soft tissue lesions and deep joints
- Axial skeleton – assess bone and soft tissues of the neck, back and pelvis
- Transrectal examination of the sacroiliac and lumbosacral regions
- Pastern and transcunean – visualise soft tissue structures of the lower pastern and foot
- Laryngeal – useful to diagnose upper airway dysfunction
- Strain elastography – can help diagnose conditions like tendon injuries, ligament tears, and peripheral neuropathies. Useful to monitor tendon/ligament healing and nerve stiffness.
Echocardiography
For a more specialised diagnostic approach, we have a top-of-the-line cardiac ultrasound package. Our advanced cardiac probe allows for detailed cardiac evaluations, allowing further assessment of arrhythmias, murmurs, and other heart-related issues that may affect your horseβs athletic performance and health.
